Nigel Farage: Political Career

Nigel Farage is the leader of Reform UK. He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Clacton on 4 July 2024 and resigned the seat on 7 July 2026 to trigger a by-election, while remaining leader of the party. His political career spans more than three decades and is closely associated with Euroscepticism, populist messaging and extensive media activity.

Entry into politics

Farage left the Conservative Party over the Maastricht Treaty in the early 1990s and joined the newly formed UK Independence Party (UKIP). He served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for South East England from 1999 until the UK left the EU in 2020, becoming nationally prominent through repeated Westminster campaigns even before entering the Commons.

UKIP leadership and the Brexit campaign

Under Farage’s leadership, UKIP grew from a small Eurosceptic movement into a major force in British politics and, at times, faced controversy over members’ conduct. During the 2016 EU referendum, Farage ran a parallel campaign to the official Vote Leave group; he unveiled the “Breaking Point” poster, which drew widespread condemnation, and promoted the “£350 million a week for the NHS” claim, later criticised by the UK Statistics Authority as misleading in official correspondence.

After Brexit and the formation of Reform UK

After the referendum, Farage stepped down as UKIP leader, launched the Brexit Party in 2019 and rebranded it as Reform UK (name change approved on 4 January 2021). He cultivated international links, including with Steve Bannon and Donald Trump, and became a regular broadcaster. In June 2024, he returned as Reform UK leader.

Member of Parliament for Clacton

In the 2024 general election, Farage won Clacton, becoming an MP for the first time after several unsuccessful attempts to enter Westminster. He represented the constituency from 4 July 2024 until resigning on 7 July 2026 to trigger a by-election, in which he announced he would stand again as the Reform UK candidate.

Resignation and Clacton by-election (2026)

On 7 July 2026, Nigel Farage announced his resignation as the Member of Parliament for Clacton, triggering a by-election in the constituency. He said he wanted voters to decide whether they still had confidence in him following parliamentary scrutiny of his financial declarations and described the contest as a choice between himself and what he called the political “establishment”.

Farage immediately confirmed he would stand again as the Reform UK candidate. Parliamentary and regulatory investigations into his financial declarations continued independently of the by-election, as resigning as an MP does not automatically end Standards Commissioner or Electoral Commission enquiries.

Recent developments

Farage continues to feature prominently in UK political coverage. In October 2025, a man was convicted at Southwark Crown Court for making a threat to kill him via social media. In July 2026, his resignation as MP for Clacton and decision to seek a renewed mandate through a by-election generated significant political and media attention.

Farage’s Continuing Influence

Since entering Westminster in 2024, Farage has remained one of Britain’s most prominent political figures. Although he resigned his Clacton seat in July 2026, he continues to lead Reform UK and remains a significant influence through campaigning, broadcasting and media appearances. Reform UK continues to position itself as a party of protest, focusing on economic frustration, border control and criticism of mainstream institutions. Whether his long-term goal is parliamentary reform or continued influence through broadcasting, Farage’s career highlights how modern populism operates across both politics and media.
